How to ask for a job referral
Templates, timing, and etiquette for asking your network for a referral — without making it awkward for either of you.
Why referrals work
Referred candidates are up to 5x more likely to be hired than cold applicants, and referral interviews are around 35% more likely to end in an offer. The reason is simple: recruiters trust a warm intro more than a resume from a stranger. Asking well is the whole game.
The three rules of asking
- Be specific. Don't ask "do you know anyone hiring?" Ask about one company and one role.
- Do the work for them. Include the job link, your resume, and a pre-written message they can forward in 15 seconds.
- Give them an easy out. "No pressure if you don't feel like you know them well enough" turns a favor into a choice.
Templates that work
LinkedIn message (close contact)
Hey [Name] — I saw you're connected to [Person] at [Company]. I just applied for the [Role] there and I think it'd be a really strong fit. Would you be open to a quick intro? I've attached my resume and the job link below to make it easy. Totally understand if it's not the right ask. Job: [link] Resume: [link] Thanks either way!
Email (former colleague)
Subject: Quick favor — referral at [Company]? Hey [Name], Hope you're doing well! I'm in the middle of a job search and [Company] is high on my list. I noticed you've been there [X] years — congrats on the run. I applied for the [Role] on [team] last week. If you know the hiring manager or someone on the team well enough to pass my resume along, I'd be hugely grateful. If not, no worries at all. I've attached my resume and the JD in case it's useful. Thanks, [You]
Text (friend)
Hey! Random ask — you still at [Company]? I applied for [Role] and would love a referral if you're willing. I'll send over everything you need so it's basically copy-paste. No worries if not!
Etiquette rules
- Don't ask cold. If you haven't spoken in a year, open with a real reconnect, not a favor.
- One ask at a time. Don't send a list of five companies in one message. Pick the strongest fit.
- Say thank you fast. Whether they refer you or not, follow up within a day.
- Close the loop. Update them when you hear back — even if it's a rejection. It makes them more likely to help you next time.
The lower-friction way
Templates work, but the biggest barrier to referrals isn't your message — it's making your whole network pattern-match every conversation to your job search. Most people forget you're even looking.
ReferralRocket flips this. You build a list of the companies you're targeting and share one link. Your network scans it in 20 seconds, spots a name they recognize, and clicks "I know someone there." We automatically send them your resume, the job link, and a pre-written referral message. Zero friction for them. Zero awkward one-off asks for you.
